You have closed your home sale. If you haven’t completely moved out already, you now have a small window to do so. Here are some tips that can help you hand over the keys to your home without making the transfer a logistical nightmare:

  • Plan early. Moving day is exciting, but planning the move itself can be a time-consuming process, so get organized and start packing as early as possible. The decluttering and cleaning you did to stage your home will make your packing easier.
  • Save money for the move. No matter which way you look at it, moving is expensive. Therefore, be prepared and have a budget plan in place. Make sure you collect quotes from different professional movers and schedule a truck as soon as possible.

The Moving Checklist

Moving out of your home after selling it is a big deal, and there are things you can do to prepare so that your whole moving process goes smoothly.

Two Months Out

Two months before you move, provided that you have that much time, you should:

  • Forward your medical records if you’re changing providers; transfer your prescriptions, too.
  • Get new pet tags for your pets.
  • Measure all your furniture so you can plan properly for it in your new home.
  • Request time off work.
  • Schedule painting and repairs on your current home or your new home.

One Month Out

One month ahead of the move, make time to:

  • Downsize and declutter your possessions.
  • Begin packing.
  • Gather all your important documents, such as birth certificates and insurance policies.
  • Start looking for moving companies that can handle your relocation.
  • Take inventory of your belongings.

Two Weeks Out

Two weeks before you move:

  • Complete your change of address with the U.S. Postal Service, and notify any subscriptions, credit card companies or other important entities of your new address
  • Keep packing. Make sure you add labels to every box so you know where your belongings are when you arrive at your new home.
  • Schedule disposal for large items you won’t be taking with you.
  • Hire the moving company.
  • Schedule utilities in your new home.

One Week Out

When you’re one week away from your move, you should:

  • Make arrangements for your pets on moving day. That may include hiring a pet-sitter so that your pets don’t make a break for it while movers are coming in and out of your home.
  • Reconfirm everything you have scheduled, including your movers and the utility appointments at your new place.
  • Pack your “essentials” box with items you’ll need on moving day, such as pet food, kids’ toys and important paperwork. Don’t forget toothbrushes and toothpaste, as well as other toiletries, pajamas, towels and paper plates.
  • Defrost the freezer.

Moving Day

You’ll be busy on moving day – but don’t forget to:

  • Double check the U.S. Department of Transportation number on the moving truck with the number on your estimate.
  • Supervise the moving crew when they load up your belongings.
  • Keep all your valuables in your car or suitcase near you.
  • Walk through your current home to make sure everything is out. Also, check that windows and doors are locked, and that the electricity, water and gas are shut off.
  • Take inventory of moved items in your new home.
